Tom Myerscough is a senior Japan business specialist with broader Asia Pacific experience acquired from top level operating management with a leading European multinational company. His initial career in macromolecular and protein research opened the door to 25 years' experience in the Asian region including 18 years based in Japan. Tom is intimately familiar with central and regional government relations in the UK and Japan and has directed the promotion of Japan-UK business relationships for the UK government's Department of Trade & Industry and the Welsh Development Agency.

As Managing Director of Japan Regional Ventures Ltd., Tom now operates on behalf of selected Japanese prefectural organisations who wish to promote their interests into Europe. Forging tie-ups with European businesses particularly in respect of investment into Japan, technology licensing and research collaboration are priority activities.

Japan market entry support is also provided for European companies wishing to move away from the more traditional channels into the Japan market to entry-strategies where a regional focus stands to bring a distinct competitive strength. Business sectors include high-tech materials, biotechnology, chemicals, plastics, healthcare, automotive and aerospace.

Since 1983, ANARI Inc., headquartered in Washington, DC, has conducted financial and investment business globally, initially focused on Asia, and more recently embracing European and Latin markets as well.

■Institutional Investors: ANARI organizes investment missions for top investment officers of the Ford Foundation, TIAA-CREF, DuPont Pension Fund, Wellington, and other institutional investors, pension funds and money managers from the US, Europe, and Japan. These missions meet with foreign political, economic and financial leaders facilitating asset allocation and investment planning. Since 1986, these missions have embraced 10 Asian, 9 European, and 5 Latin countries.

■Institute of International Finance: For this Washington DC-based institute of 300 banks, securities companies, money managers, and institutional investors from the US and 40 foreign countries, ANARI helps attract and integrate into its activities Asian financial institutions and Western institutional investors.

■Investment and Finance: Clients for a variety of capital raising and financial consulting matters in Asia have included (1)Darby Overseas Investments, Ltd. (the investment firm of former US Treasury Secretary Nicholas Brady); and (2) Conning & Company (insurance industry specialty investment bank and consultancy).

ANARI founder & President Bill Anawaty is a graduate of Yale University (B.A.,1968, international Relations) and University of Texas Law School (J.D., 1972). He is a member of the Yale Club (New York and Washington) and serves on the local recruitment committees for Washington and Asia.

At the US Treasury Department (1975-81), Mr. Anawaty first dealt with Japanese and Asian financial communities while serving as International Legal Counsel, then as Director of Special Programs for the Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs; and finally as Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary.

The American City Corporation Mr. Molinaro served as CEO of the company. Under his direction, it carried out consulting assignments in 200 cities in the US, Canada, South America, Africa, South Korea, Tanzania, Scotland, England and six Native American Tribal Reservations in North Carolina, Florida, South Dakota, New York, California and Oklahoma.

The company specialized in downtown revitalization and economic planning and development strategies. As one of its programs, the corporation conceived and operated a leadership institute for community leaders, called The Urban Life Center in Columbia, Maryland. More than 5 thousand leaders participated in various leadership training programs.

Over 100 retirement communities are now located on or near colleges and another 10 are in the planning phase. Most of these retirement communities are located in small towns.
These college-based retirement communities are responding to growing demand by retirees for ways to stay mentally and physically active. College towns become magnets for alumni and faculty when they are ready to retire.

　今、東京一極化が進み、地方都市の停滞、個性を失った各地の町々や商店街は衰退の一途、更に過疎地に至っては、道路は延びても、人の姿が急速に消えている。

　一方で忘れられる里の野山には、自然との厳しい葛藤の中にも、その地の特性を活かし、切り開いた生活の歴史が眠っている。変わらぬ風景の中に四季折々の往事の里の営みが彷彿とする。 山菜採りから茸狩り、兎狩り、猪狩り、鰻や蟹等を採った川狩り等、自ら様々な食材を採取する野趣味と共に、風味豊かな採りたての"旬" を食べる事の、最高に贅沢でお洒落な食文化があった。更に蛍狩り、紅葉狩り等の風流な風習まで五感で味わう 　"狩り" や祭りの風俗や風物詩の楽しさを通して里の風情といった四季の「風」があった。

峰々を抜ける風、深い森木立の渓流、自然エネルギーを使い、自然の恵みを活かす里こそ本来の自然循環型社会。こうした地域資源を時代に即した技術で支え、1世紀前には欧米人を感動させ、"庭園都市" として世界に誇った里山の原風景を"借景"にし、土地の個性を最大限活かした新しい総合的な環境をデザインしたい。
